Two NYC musicians are taking instruments and gaming to the next level as “Modal Kombat,” a hybrid of performance art and video game battles. Using modern classical music, emerging technology and popular culture, the show entertains audiences around Europe and the US with classic games from the past.

Now, it would be easy for us to call Modal Kombat “real life guitar heroes” or some other cheesy play off of the Guitar Hero phenomenon, but that would be serving them a real injustice. Besides being two ridiculously talented guitarists, David Hindman and Evan Drummond literally play Mortal Kombat, amongst other video games, using their guitars as controllers. Yeah, seriously.

Modal Kombat is a unique multimedia experience from the mind of David Hindman. Through a revolutionary new process, the battles of Liu Kang, Kitana, Sub-Zero and the rest are controlled by the audio of two dueling classical guitars, played by Hindman and his performance partner Evan Drummond.

New Yorkers David Hindman and Evan Drummond have created a new form of gaming, and the guitar- a real one- is the controller. Conceived and developed while Hindman was a student at New York University, “Modal Kombat†is an extension of the classic game Mortal Kombat. Instead of battling with buttons, however, characters fight by responding to notes, chords, and melodies played live by participants on guitar.
